Simplified STR & SNP Analysis
Many forensic labs currently utilize PCR and capillary electrophoresis (CE)-based methods to analyze short tandem repeat (STR) markers and other polymorphisms. However, sequencing STRs grants an additional level of resolution for determining differences between individuals, including the ability to see intra-STR single nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs. SNPs can be used for identification when DNA is too degraded for STR analysis, or to provide physical and biogeographical estimation for investigative intelligence.
