Managed by the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), the Formula DNA Capacity Enhancement for Backlog Reduction (CEBR) Program and Competitive DNA Capacity Enhancement for Backlog Reduction (CEBR) Program are designed to support forensic laboratories that want to purchase capital equipment, reagents, validation and training for CODIS-compatible workflows. Applicants can be state or local governments with existing crime laboratories that conduct DNA analysis and want to increase their DNA capacity.

National Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) Program

Managed by the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), the National Sexual Assault Kit Initiative is designed to address the growing number of unsubmitted sexual assault kits (SAKs) in law enforcement custody to provide resolution for victims. SAKI improves state and local jurisdictions’ capacities to respond to violent crime through the inventory of unprocessed kits, collection of DNA from sexual assault kit evidence, generation of CODIS-compatible and forensic genetic genealogy (FGG) profiles, investigation, and prosecution of SAK cases.

Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants Program

Managed by the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), the  Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants Program is designed to support the quality and timeliness of forensic, medical examiner, and coroner services in the state. Funds can be used to purchase, upgrade, or lease capital equipment, software, reagents, validation, and training for CODIS compatible and forensic genetic genealogy workflows. Funds may also be applied to train, assist, and employ forensic laboratory personnel.

Applicants may include city, township, county and state governments, Native American tribes, and prosecuting agencies.  Funds can be applied to the purchase, lease or upgrade of software and reagents. Funds may also be used for outsourcing forensic analysis of evidence for these cases.
